Did you know that fishing gear is a major source of plastic pollution in our ocean, and the deadliest form of marine litter…?
Countless fish and around 100.000 whales, dolphins, seabirds and seals die miserably in lost fishing nets, so called “ghost nets”, every year. Recent studies show that in wide parts of our ocean up to 50% of the plastic is related to fisheries (Lebreton et al. 2018). The materials take around 600 years to fall into small pieces and are then called Micro- or Nanopastics. Those facts underline that urgent action is needed. Fishing4Ghosts is a project, founded in Portugal, focusing on solutions for this globally often underestimated issue.
